If you have to choose where to put your primary effort, building a direct line of communication to your community members, such as subscribers and your email database, wins hands down every single time.
You see, discoverability platforms like search engines, AI platforms, and social media channels do not belong to you. When you rely entirely on AI overviews, AI citations, search engines’ algorithms, or social media algorithms to get found, your content development and distribution activities are constantly dependent on algorithm updates and policies that you cannot control. You could spend months figuring out what works and what won’t work, and this is a complete waste of time. If you managed to find out how things work after that, it will be short-term, as the upcoming changes to the algorithm might happen sooner than you think. Of course, they are fantastic tools for top-of-funnel discovery, but there are thousands, if not millions, of other businesses out there you are competing with. And some of them have deep pockets.
Growing your own subscriber list, on the other hand, is a real place you can actually win—big. When someone hands over their email address, mobile number or joins your private community, they are giving you explicit permission to speak directly to them without a digital middleman deciding whether your message is worthy of their feed. You control the delivery, the message, and the timing. More importantly, subscribers represent a much higher level of intent and trust than casual browsers who happen to stumble across your business on a search page. Owning a 1,000-email list is way better than 100,000 followers on social media. You might not be popular, but the reachability is better on email, and the conversion rate is also better.
How about not going the either-or way? You don’t have to choose. The most resilient strategy is to treat discoverability not as the end goal, but as the engine that grows your owned subscriber list. Use AI and search visibility to get noticed by new people, but focus your core effort on converting those casual visitors into long-term subscribers as quickly as possible so you are never left vulnerable when the platforms decide to change the rules.
