What Is Affiliate Marketing And How Does It Work?

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based strategy where a business rewards partners (individuals and brands) known as affiliates for driving sales or leads through their promotional efforts. In simple terms, affiliates promote your product or service, and you pay them a commission for every successful referral. Think of it as turning your satisfied customers, bloggers, or social media influencers into an extended sales team without the fixed salaries. All strictly on commissions.

Here’s how it works.

1. Choose the right affiliates. These could be influencers, bloggers, or even loyal customers whose audience aligns with your brand. The key is relevance: someone ( or brands such as popular blogs or magazines) whose followers would genuinely be interested in your product.

2. Provide unique tracking links. Each affiliate gets a personalised link or code. When someone clicks and makes a purchase, the system automatically tracks it back to the affiliate.

3. Set clear commission structures. Commissions can be a percentage of the sale, a fixed fee per lead, or tiered rewards for higher performance. Transparency here keeps affiliates motivated.

4. Equip affiliates with promotional tools. Share banners, product images, sample posts, or tutorial videos that they can use. The easier it is for them to promote, the better the results.

5. Track, optimise, and scale. Monitor which affiliates drive the most conversions and which types of content perform best. Double down on high performers and refine your program over time.

Here’s an example. Imagine a local cosmetics brand launching a new skincare serum. They partner with beauty influencers on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. Each influencer creates a short video demonstrating the serum’s benefits and includes a unique discount code for their followers. When a follower buys the serum using that code, the influencer earns a commission.

Meanwhile, the brand reaches a highly targeted audience without investing heavily in traditional advertising. Over time, the brand identifies which influencers drive the most sales and focuses resources there, maximising ROI. Just so you know, affiliate marketing works for the B2C businesses because it leverages trust. People are more likely to buy from someone they follow and admire. For SMEs, it’s a low-risk, scalable way to grow revenue while building brand awareness.
